Preparing the Mind for the Season Ahead
As we gear up for an exciting new soccer season, Hoover-Vestavia Soccer is proud to host a special Preseason Summit designed to support not just the physical, but also the mental and emotional well-being of our players. This unique session will be led by Alice Haygood Churnock, LPC-S, CEDS, BCN, one of the Southeast’s leading experts in youth mental performance and athlete development.
Event Details
- Saturday, August 2
- 3:00 – 4:00 PM
- The Jordan Room at the Hoover Met
- Open to all VHSC, HSC, and HVS families
This one-hour session is open to all families and athletes across our clubs and is packed with insightful, practical takeaways to help your child grow both on and off the pitch.
Guiding Players with Confidence
Alice will share what parents should—and shouldn’t—say before, during, and after games. Her powerful message centers around how small shifts in communication can boost confidence, ease performance pressure, and reinforce a love for the game.
Redefining Success in Youth Soccer
Forget the scoreboard. Alice will help us reframe success beyond wins and losses by highlighting growth in areas such as mindset, effort, resilience, and contributions to the team. It’s a healthy and empowering perspective that all families can benefit from.
Understanding and Managing Performance Anxiety
Why do some players freeze up or feel overwhelmed before games? Alice will explain what’s happening in the brain and body, how parents can respond in those moments, and what not to say when your child is struggling. These strategies are especially helpful for parents of sensitive or perfectionist athletes.
Building Mental Skills for Peak Performance
Confidence, focus, and mental toughness can be trained, just like a strong shot or first touch. Alice will walk us through simple tools like visualization, belly breathing, and mindfulness that players can use daily to stay composed and competitive.
