The Vestavia Hills Steamers 04 Black’s run to a National Championship ended with a 1-0 loss to Cal-North Champs Salinas United in the last group game at the recent National Championships, held recently in Frisco Texas!
After a scoreless first half, the Steamers conceded a free kick early in the second half. The resulting shot was deflected, and a Salinas forward popped up to tuck in the loose ball.
The boys finished the event with two impressive ties and this 0-1 defeat. The results show what a competitive group our club sent to Texas. This is the first time in 21 years, and only the second time in Alabama boys soccer history, that a team has made it this far.
The last team to do so was also from Vestavia- the ’79 Steamers, coached by Shane Amsler back in 1987. They also won Regionals in Greensboro and went on to finish 3rd at Nationals.
Congrats to Coach Carlo and all the boys, and a big thanks to ‘Keeper coach AJ Robles, Chief Scout Luke Whittle, trainer Kenny Davis, and Budget Car and Truck Rental, for their help and support.
