What is U6 Soccer?

Under 6 Soccer (also known as U6 or Sunday Soccer) is a wonderful program designed to introduce young children to the game of soccer. First and foremost, U6 soccer is about kids having FUN! At the U6 level, kids play small-sided soccer in a 4v4 format emphasizing fun and basic soccer skills. Teams are co-ed and limited to a maximum of eight players per team. Each child plays at least half of every game. U6 soccer differs from soccer in older age groups in that (1) no score is kept, (2) coaches are on the field with the players during the game encouraging the players and teaching them basic soccer, (3) the playing field is small (usually 20 yards wide by 30 yards long), and (4) there is no goalkeeper.

Who can participate?

Boys and girls whose birth dates fall within the specified time periods are eligible to play U6 soccer. To verify your child’s eligibility to play U6 soccer, click here to return to the Age Group Chart.

When do the kids play?

The U6 season is a eight (8) session season. The spring season runs early March and ends early May. The fall season starts early September and continues through early November. The teams practice and play only on Sunday afternoons. The format is thirty minutes of practice and then a 30 minute game.

Where do the kids play?

Players in the U6 age group may elect on their registration form to play on a Liberty Park or Central team. Liberty Park teams play all Sunday sessions at the Vestavia Hills Sports Complex at Liberty Park. Central teams play all Sunday sessions at the soccer field adjacent to Vestavia Hills Central Elementary School.

  • Cost for set of jerseys (2) runs around $20-$30.

Can my child play on a team with his or her friends?

Teams are assigned and formed by the Age Group Commissioner. An effort will be made to accommodate requests to play with friends (provided such request is made on the registration form and received by the Club prior to the registration deadline). Please note that the Age Group Commissioner is also charged with the responsibility of trying to create comparable teams (teams that are age and gender balanced). Therefore, the Age Group Commissioner may or may not be able to honor a specific request at his or her discretion.

How can I help with U6 Soccer?

Adult volunteers are always needed and welcome for the U6 Age Group! If you are interested in being a head coach or an assistant coach, please so indicate on your registration form or contact the U6 Age Group Commissioner. No previous soccer coaching experience or soccer knowledge is expected or required. After the teams are formed and coaches recruited, each team will need a Team Parent to assist the team coaches with administrative duties, including the preparation of a snack schedule, indicating whose family is bringing the after the game snacks and planning the team’s end of the season party. If you are willing to serve as a Team Parent, please so indicate on the registration form or let your coach know of your willingness to help out.
